South African coach Russell Domingo, who previously served as the head coach of both Bangladesh and South Africa, has signed a two-year agreement to take charge of Hampshire. The county side is aiming to strengthen its leadership structure with experienced international coaches, and Domingo’s recruitment is seen as a major acquisition.
Domingo, however, will not be leaving his current role entirely. He remains part of the Lions coaching system, a Johannesburg-based domestic team he has been involved with since 2023. Reports indicate that he will divide his time between Hampshire and the Lions, a model that has become increasingly common among high-profile coaches engaged in multiple assignments.
Cricketing circles expect to see Domingo participating in the Pakistan Super League as well, further highlighting his growing workload across continents.
His appointment comes as Hampshire look to rebuild their coaching panel. Adrian Birrell, the outgoing coach, has been replaced, and alongside Domingo, two additional names have been added to the staff. Shane Burger joins as bowling coach, bringing with him extensive international experience, while former West Indies player Jimmy Adams will serve as batting coach.
Domingo’s résumé includes three years at the helm of Bangladesh cricket from 2019 to 2022. During this period, the team achieved several historic benchmarks, such as the memorable Test win against New Zealand. Prior to that, Domingo coached South Africa from 2012 to 2017, guiding star-studded squads through major international tournaments.
At Hampshire, Domingo is expected to introduce structured training routines, data-driven preparation and a focus on mental resilience. The club’s management believes his leadership will bring stability and long-term vision, qualities they consider essential for success in the County Championship, T20 Blast and One-Day Cup.
Domingo’s calm personality and analytical mindset have earned him respect across the cricketing world. His ability to develop emerging cricketers has been particularly valued, and Hampshire hope he will help shape the next generation of county talent.
As preparations begin for the new season, attention will turn to how effectively Domingo can balance his responsibilities. The club remains confident that his methods, experience and global reputation will significantly benefit Hampshire’s ambitions.
