Details of the Incident
The catastrophe unfolded when a motorcycle, travelling towards the village of Rajapur, collided head-on with a bicycle approaching from the opposite direction. The force of the impact threw both riders onto the tarmac. Moments later, a cement-laden covered van, unable to brake in time, crushed both men under its wheels.
The victims have been identified as Tarek Hossain Mullik, 37, a police constable stationed at the Bangladesh Police Headquarters in Dhaka, and Abdul Kuddus, 65, a local farmer from the Kushura Union. Constable Tarek was reportedly returning home to his family for the weekend when the accident occurred.

Response and Legal Action
Emergency services and local residents rushed to the scene following the collision. While Constable Tarek was pronounced dead at the site of the accident, Mr Kuddus was transported in critical condition to the Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex (50-bed facility). Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he was declared dead shortly after arrival.
Officers from the Dhamrai Police Station have since secured the area and recovered both bodies for post-mortem examination. The heavy vehicle involved—a cement-carrying covered van—has been seized by the authorities. The driver, identified as 35-year-old Shahin Hawlader, was taken into custody at the scene.
Police Statement
Sub-Inspector (SI) Sujit Kumar Mridha confirmed the sequence of events, noting that the combination of the initial collision and the presence of the heavy vehicle created a “worst-case scenario” for the victims. “The police member was killed instantly due to the weight of the van. The cyclist was moved to the health complex, but his injuries were too severe to survive,” SI Mridha stated. Legal proceedings against the driver and the logistics firm are currently being processed under the Road Transport Act.
This incident highlights the ongoing safety concerns on regional highways, where mixed-speed traffic—including bicycles, motorcycles, and heavy industrial vehicles—frequently shares narrow lanes with devastating consequences.
