Drug-Addicted Son Kills Mother

A deeply disturbing incident has shaken Rajshahi, where a 55-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her drug-addicted son following a domestic dispute. The killing, which has sparked widespread shock and condemnation among local residents, occurred late on Saturday night (31 January) in the Kharkhari area under Chandrima Police Station in the Rajshahi Metropolitan region.

Police recovered the woman’s body at approximately 10:30 pm after receiving information from local residents. The deceased was identified as Sohagi Khatun, wife of Azizul Islam, a long-time resident of the neighbourhood. According to police and eyewitness accounts, the tragedy unfolded inside the family home and was rooted in a long-standing pattern of substance abuse and erratic behaviour by the accused.

The accused, Mohammad Suman, the victim’s son, is known in the area for his prolonged addiction to narcotics and a history of unruly conduct. Neighbours reported that Suman frequently demanded money from family members to fund his drug habit, often leading to heated arguments. On the night of the incident, he reportedly approached his mother demanding cash to purchase drugs. When Sohagi Khatun refused, an intense argument broke out between them.

Witnesses stated that Suman became violently enraged following his mother’s refusal. In a fit of anger, he allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon kept inside the house. Sohagi Khatun sustained critical injuries and collapsed on the spot. Despite the efforts of neighbours who rushed in after hearing the commotion, she succumbed to her injuries within a short time.

After the attack, Suman reportedly attempted to flee the scene, leaving his mother’s body on the road nearby. However, local residents quickly realised what had happened and managed to detain him before he could escape. He was later handed over to the police when officers from Chandrima Police Station arrived at the scene.

The body of the deceased was recovered by police and preparations were made to send it to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Chandrima Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam confirmed that legal proceedings were under way. He stated that the accused had been taken into police custody and that a murder case would be filed in connection with the incident.

The officer added that the post-mortem report would help determine the precise cause of death and provide further clarity regarding the nature of the injuries. Police are also questioning the accused to gather more details about the sequence of events leading up to the killing.

The incident has once again highlighted the devastating social consequences of drug addiction and its impact on families. Local residents expressed grief over the death of Sohagi Khatun and called for stronger community-based interventions, rehabilitation programmes, and law enforcement measures to address substance abuse and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
