A violent domestic altercation triggered by a suspected substance abuse dispute has left a mother and her younger son hospitalised with severe injuries in Rajshahi. The incident occurred late Saturday night in the Meherchandi Uttarpara area under the jurisdiction of Chandrima Police Station.
The suspect, 34-year-old Mehedi Hasan, also known as Munna, allegedly turned a sharp kitchen cleaver on his 55-year-old mother, Monowara Khatun, and his 28-year-old brother, Mridul. According to local accounts and police findings, the violence erupted when the family refused to hand over money demanded by Mehedi to purchase narcotics.
As the assault unfolded, neighbours rushed to the property after hearing cries for help. Overwhelmed by the situation, locals detained the suspect and administered a beating before alerting the authorities. Officers from Chandrima Police Station forced entry into the residence, rescuing the injured family members and securing the scene.
All three individuals—the two victims and the alleged attacker—were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Medical staff admitted Mridul and Mehedi to Ward 8, while Monowara Khatun was placed in Ward 2 for intensive medical care. Hospital authorities confirmed that all three remain under observation, dispelling unverified social media rumors claiming fatalities from the attack. Police strongly urged the public to refrain from circulating unconfirmed reports online.
Following the incident, Monowara’s daughter lodged a formal complaint at Chandrima Police Station. Officers formally arrested Mehedi in connection with the case and seized the weapon used in the attack. Investigators noted that while substance abuse appears to be the primary catalyst for the violence, broader inquiries into family dynamics and surrounding circumstances remain ongoing.
Deputy Commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police and media spokesperson, Md Gaziur Rahman, confirmed the sequence of events and subsequent arrests. Police stated that once the injured suspect completes his hospital treatment, he will be produced before a local court to face formal legal proceedings.
