More than two decades after Lionel Messi first announced himself on the global stage against Egypt, the same opponent has once again brought back memories of a defining moment in the Argentine legend’s career. As Argentina prepare to face Egypt in the World Cup last-16 stage, attention has turned to the match that marked the beginning of Messi’s extraordinary international journey.
Twenty-one years ago, during the 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, Messi made his first appearance in the starting line-up at a World Cup-level tournament against Egypt. It was a match that would become a landmark in football history, as the young Argentine scored his first World Cup goal and gave a glimpse of the brilliance that would later make him one of the greatest players of all time.
Messi’s journey with the Argentina national team had begun a year earlier, in 2004, when he featured in a friendly match against Paraguay. However, at that stage he was still an emerging talent trying to establish himself. His move into the spotlight came during the Under-20 World Cup in the Netherlands, where he transformed from a promising youngster into a player capable of deciding major matches.
Argentina’s start to that tournament was far from ideal. They suffered a 1-0 defeat against the United States in their opening match, leaving their hopes of progressing under pressure. The American team featured Freddy Adu, who was considered one of the most exciting young talents in world football at the time after becoming the youngest player to appear in Major League Soccer at just 14.
Messi, meanwhile, was still waiting for his opportunity to make a major impact. Although he had already started training and playing for Barcelona’s senior side, he was not yet regarded as a global superstar. He came on as a substitute against the United States but was unable to change the outcome of the match.
The second game against Egypt proved to be the turning point. Given his first start in the tournament, Messi immediately showed why Argentina had such high hopes for him. Just two minutes after the second half began, he scored from a cross delivered by Julio Barroso to put Argentina ahead.
Pablo Zabaleta later added another goal, securing a 2-0 victory for Argentina and helping them recover from their disappointing opening defeat. Messi was substituted late in the match, with coach Francisco Ferraro bringing on Lucas Biglia as Argentina managed their advantage.
That goal against Egypt opened the door to a remarkable tournament for Messi. He finished the competition with six goals, earning the Golden Boot as the tournament’s leading scorer. His performances also earned him the Golden Ball award for the best player of the tournament.
Messi played a crucial role in Argentina’s title-winning campaign. He scored in the semi-final victory over Brazil and produced a memorable display in the final against Nigeria, where he scored twice to help Argentina lift the trophy.
Since then, Messi’s career has reached heights few footballers have ever achieved. He has won numerous individual honours, captained Argentina to major international success and established himself as one of the most influential figures in the sport.
Now, after 21 years, Argentina and Egypt meet again on the World Cup stage. The upcoming match is not only a battle for a place in the quarter-finals but also a reminder of where Messi’s remarkable international story began — against the very same opponent that witnessed the first chapter of his World Cup legacy.
