Eid Celebrations Bring Hope Inside Manikganj Prison

Manikganj, Bangladesh – Even behind bars, the spirit of Eid can reach those living in confinement. In a remarkable demonstration of humanity, the authorities at Manikganj District Jail organised a series of special events to bring the joy of Eid-ul-Fitr to inmates, providing a rare reprieve from the monotony of prison life and emphasising the importance of emotional well-being.

The celebrations commenced on Saturday, 21 March, at 9:00 am with a congregational Eid prayer held within the prison compound. In an extraordinary display of unity, both inmates and on-duty prison officers prayed shoulder to shoulder. Following the prayer, participants exchanged greetings, hugs, and well-wishes, bridging the divide between confinement and community through the shared spirit of the festival.

Festive Meals and Cultural Events

From Eid day through the following three days, inmates were treated to specially prepared meals, featuring an upgraded menu designed to recreate the warmth of a home-style celebration. Prison Superintendent Humayun Kabir Khan and senior officials oversaw the initiative, ensuring that the meals provided comfort and a sense of normalcy despite the restrictive environment.

In the afternoon of Eid, a cultural programme was organised, with music, performances, and artistic presentations by the inmates themselves. The event transformed the prison environment, allowing participants to enjoy moments of laughter, applause, and collective engagement that momentarily lifted them beyond the confines of their cells.

Recreational Initiatives and Family Connections

On the third day of the festivities, a friendly cricket match was staged within the prison grounds. Speaking about the event, Syed Javed Hossain, District Official, said:
“With approximately 500 inmates currently in Manikganj prison, working closely with them often feels like sharing in their confined life. Initiatives like this cricket match allow us to share moments of joy, build camaraderie, and show that humanity transcends walls.”

In addition, authorities granted inmates special privileges during the festive period, including:

  • Direct visits with family members
  • Five-minute free phone calls
  • Permission to consume home-cooked meals over three consecutive days

Subedar Habibur Rahman Habib noted that these measures helped inmates feel closer to their families, alleviating some of the emotional strain of incarceration and making the festive period more inclusive and meaningful. Inmates themselves expressed gratitude, with some describing the celebrations as “a rare chance to feel part of the outside world” and “a moment of hope and togetherness in an otherwise restricted life.”
