As Eid approaches, excitement is mounting for the festival’s cinematic offerings. The Bangladesh Film Certification Board has approved five major films for release: “Dhum” (Redwan Rony), “Rakshas” (Mehedi Hasan Hridoy), “Prince” (Abu Hayat Mahmud), “Pressure Cooker” (Raihan Rafi), and “Bonolota Express” (Tanim Noor).
While discussions have focused on the unusually high number of releases and the ongoing concern over limited cinema halls, the spotlight for audiences remains firmly on the actresses who headline these films. Their performances are expected to be a key draw for viewers this Eid.
Ensemble Casts and Star Power
Raihan Rafi’s “Pressure Cooker” is a heroine-driven film featuring Shabnam Bubli, Nazifa Tushi, Maria Shanta, and Snigdha Chowdhury. Although the story includes four leading ladies, the narrative primarily revolves around Bubli and Tushi. Speaking on her role, Tushi said:
“Pressure Cooker tells a story that is quite unlike anything we have seen recently. A female-centric plot of this nature is a bold choice, and I am proud to be part of it. There is no competition; my focus is purely on delivering my performance. I believe audiences will connect with the story.”
Bubli highlighted the story itself as the film’s main strength, describing it as an Eid gift from the director for viewers.
Meanwhile, Redwan Rony’s “Dhum”, shot across Kazakhstan and Bangladesh, stars Puja Cherry. After a long absence from the silver screen, the film is being hailed as a potential career resurgence for her. Puja Cherry described the project as a “rebirth” in her acting journey, citing the freshness of the script and the challenge of the role.
Abu Hayat Mahmud’s “Prince” pairs Tasnia Farin with Shakib Khan for the first time, and features Indian actress Jyotirmoyee Kundu, giving the film a cross-border dimension. Farin expressed eagerness to hear audience reactions to her debut collaboration.
Mehedi Hasan Hridoy’s “Rakshas” also features an Indian actress, Sushmita Chatterjee, opposite Siyam Ahmed, marking two Indian actresses in this year’s Eid lineup.
Lastly, Tanim Noor’s “Bonolota Express”, adapted from Humayun Ahmed’s novel Kichukhon, stars Sabila Noor in the lead role of Chitra. She called the project “a major milestone” in her career, noting the extensive preparation required for the character and her excitement about presenting it to family audiences.
