A suspected fraudulent co-operative scheme in Bogura has left around 1,200 families financially distressed after allegedly embezzling approximately Tk 7.7 million (£55,000). The organisers had promised to provide meat ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr in exchange for small, regular instalments collected throughout the year, but have since disappeared without delivering on their commitments.
The event took place in the Malgram Chaprapara area of Bogura town, where local residents had eagerly participated in what appeared to be a convenient savings the plan. According to community members, three individuals—Abdul Hakim, Akram, and Shahin—from nearby Malgram Notunpara launched an initiative called “Four Star Business Co-operative Society”. Their scheme targeted lower- and middle-income households, offering an affordable way to secure meat for Eid, a time when food costs often rise sharply.
Participants were required to purchase membership “cards” priced at Tk 5,000 each. Many families opted for multiple cards in order to meet their anticipated Eid needs. Over the course of the year, these contributions accumulated to almost Tk 7.7 million.
Initially, the organisers announced 15 March as the official distribution date for the promised meat. אולם, shortly before that date, the delivery was postponed to 17 March. When members arrived on the revised date to collect their allocations, they were met with locked premises and no representatives present. Attempts to contact the organisers proved unsuccessful, as all listed phone numbers had been switched off, confirming fears of a deliberate scam.
Victims have expressed deep frustration and concern over their losses. Parul, a resident of Chaprapara, explained that she had carefully saved small amounts every week, sacrificing other household expenses in the hope of celebrating Eid with dignity. “Now everything is uncertain,” she said. Another victim, Akhli Begum, noted that her family had been counting on receiving 10 to 12 kilograms of meat. “We do not know how we will manage during Eid,” she added.
local residents have questioned the lack of oversight regarding the scheme. Many now believe that proper verification of the organisation’s registration and operations might have prevented the fraud. The In the incident has highlighted the vulnerability of economically disadvantaged groups to such deceptive financial arrangements.
Following the incident, all activities of the co-operative have ceased, and the Three accused remain untraceable. Law enforcement officials have advised victims to file formal complaints. Inspector Kamruzzaman, in charge of the Stadium Police Outpost, stated that legal action would be initiated once official reports are submitted.
