A grievous accident in Sunamganj claimed the lives of two young friends while a third sustained injuries after losing control of a motorcycle during an Eid outing. The incident occurred around midday on Sunday along the Sunamganj–Dhirai road in Gagli, within Shantiganj Upazila.

Victims
The deceased were identified as Safikul Islam (28), son of the late Ukil Ali of Muktakhai village in Shimulbak Union, and his friend Saidul Islam. The third passenger, Gulzar Ahmed, survived but was hospitalised and remains under treatment.
The Accident
According to police and eyewitnesses, the trio had set out from Safikul’s village to visit the Shimul Bagan tourist site in Tahirpur for Eid celebrations. While navigating the Sunamganj–Dhirai road near Gagli, the motorcycle lost control and collided violently with a tree.
The impact was devastating: the motorcycle’s front section was completely crushed, and Safikul sustained catastrophic injuries, with broken bones pinning him against the tree. Local residents rushed to assist and transported the victims to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, where Safikul was pronounced dead on arrival.
Further Casualties
Due to the severity of his injuries, Saidul Islam was transferred to M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet for advanced treatment. Tragically, he died en route. Gulzar Ahmed remains hospitalised in Sunamganj for treatment and recovery.
Dr. Amjad Hossain, on duty at the hospital, stated:
“Of the three victims brought in, one died before arrival. Another was transferred due to critical injuries but passed away on the way. The third remains under treatment at our facility.”
Police Statement
Oli Ullah, Officer-in-Charge of Shantiganj Police Station, confirmed that police visited the accident site promptly. He verified that two individuals died and one was injured, and no complaints or third-party claims were filed concerning the incident.
