As Bangladesh prepares for the busy Eid travel period, Sheikh Robiul Alam, Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Maritime Transport, has issued a firm warning that there will be no tolerance for extortion, overcharging, or unethical practices targeting passengers. Law enforcement agencies, local administration, and transport sector stakeholders are on high alert to ensure travellers’ safety and smooth journeys.
Preparations Underway
Following a preparatory meeting at the ministry on Thursday, 5 March, Sheikh Robiul Alam outlined comprehensive measures to secure passenger travel across road, rail, and water transport networks during the Eid period. Coordination between police, transport authorities, and district administration was emphasised to prevent illegal levies and maintain orderly travel.
“Monitoring is crucial. Mobile courts are ready, highway police are vigilant, and local administration, especially police stations under district and highway jurisdictions, are fully engaged,” the minister said. He also noted that transport worker leaders are actively cooperating, ensuring drivers adhere to regulations and that no unethical practices occur.
Multi-Layered Oversight
Authorities are implementing a coordinated, multi-tiered strategy to safeguard travellers:
| Oversight Level | Responsibility | Measures Implemented |
|---|---|---|
| Law Enforcement | Highway Police, Local Police | Patrolling highways, monitoring for illegal levies |
| Judicial | Mobile Courts | On-the-spot fines and legal enforcement |
| Administrative Bodies | District & Sub-District Officials | Coordinating transport operations, monitoring complaints |
| Transport Worker Leaders | Unions and Associations | Ensuring driver compliance and ethical practices |
The minister stressed that these efforts aim to provide a safe and secure environment for the millions of travellers expected during Eid. Mobile courts can act immediately against violations, while active patrolling and oversight from transport leaders reinforce ethical standards.
Ensuring Smooth and Safe Journeys
Eid is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods in Bangladesh, with millions of people moving between urban and rural areas. The government’s approach seeks to prevent traffic chaos, minimise road accidents, and eliminate harassment or corruption at checkpoints and transport hubs.
Sheikh Robiul Alam concluded: “All stakeholders are vigilant, and every participant has taken responsibility. Under no circumstances will there be an opportunity for unethical practices to disrupt Eid travel. Our goal is to ensure every passenger reaches their destination safely and without inconvenience.”
With these measures in place, Bangladesh aims to guarantee that Eid journeys remain smooth, safe, and free from extortion, reflecting a coordinated effort between government agencies, law enforcement, and transport sector leaders.
