Eid-ul-Azha on July 10

The National Moon Sighting Committee of Bangladesh has announced that Eid-ul-Azha, the second most significant religious festival for Muslims, will be observed on Sunday, 10 July 2022. The decision was made following the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Zilhaj.

Significance of Eid-ul-Azha

Eid-ul-Azha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son, Ismail (AS), in obedience to Allah’s command. This act of devotion is celebrated by Muslims worldwide through the ritual of animal sacrifice, symbolising submission to divine will.

Observances and Traditions

On this day, Muslims across Bangladesh will perform special prayers in congregations and engage in the sacrificial slaughter of animals such as goats, cows, and camels. The meat from these sacrifices is distributed among family, friends, and the less fortunate, fostering a sense of community and charity.

Preparations Across the Country

In anticipation of the festival, livestock markets have been set up nationwide, with farmers and traders bringing in animals for sale. Authorities have implemented measures to ensure the health and safety of both animals and buyers, including veterinary checks and crowd management protocols.

Eid-ul-Azha is observed on the 10th day of Zilhaj, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The festival’s date varies annually based on the lunar cycle and the sighting of the new moon.
