In a chilling case that has sent shockwaves across Narsingdi, the court has granted an eight-day remand for the principal accused, Nur Mohammad Nura, along with six others, in connection with the gang rape and subsequent murder of a teenage girl in Madhabdi. The remand will allow police to interrogate the suspects and advance their investigation.
On Sunday, 1 March, Judicial Magistrate (Second Class) Md. Mehedi Hasan authorised the remand. Investigating officers had requested a ten-day custody period for the seven detained individuals, but the court approved an eight-day term.
According to Md. Omar Kaiyum, Inspector (Investigation) of Madhabdi Police Station, four of the accused were directly involved in the gang rape, while three others allegedly facilitated the crime by arranging a “salish” meeting to conceal the incident. Police are currently pursuing the remaining two fugitives.
No defence counsel appeared in court on behalf of the accused. Abdul Mannan Bhuiya, President of the Narsingdi District Bar Association, stated that the association had resolved not to provide legal support to the defendants in this case. He assured full cooperation with the prosecution and expressed hope that, if the police submit the charge sheet promptly, the trial could conclude within six months. The association believes the case could result in the maximum penalty, including capital punishment.
The horrific incident occurred on 25 February when Nur Mohammad and his accomplices allegedly detained the teenage girl at knifepoint. She was reportedly gang-raped and suffocated before her body was discarded in a mustard field. The victim’s mother filed a case naming nine suspects, identifying Nur as the main perpetrator.
