Elderly Farm Labourer Dies After Dispute

A 70-year-old farm labourer has died following an altercation reportedly triggered by a dispute over soil excavation in front of a residential property in Raipur Upazila of Lakshmipur district. The incident occurred on Sunday morning at the residence of Halim Daroga in the Patowarir Pul area of Gachhirhat village under Charpata Union.

The deceased, Hanif Mia, was the son of the late Habib Ullah and earned his livelihood as an agricultural labourer. According to police, family members and local residents, the incident began when Hanif Mia was carrying out earth-cutting work in front of his home. During the work, he became involved in an argument with Abdul Barek, 60, who lives in the same residential compound.

Witnesses reported that what initially started as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. During the exchange, both men allegedly engaged in pushing, scuffling and exchanging blows. At one stage of the incident, Hanif Mia collapsed to the ground and became critically ill.

Local residents immediately rushed him to Raipur Government Hospital for treatment. However, doctors on duty examined him and declared him dead shortly after his arrival. News of his death spread rapidly through the community, prompting grief among relatives and neighbours.

Following the incident, Abdul Barek reportedly left the area. Local residents said he has not returned since the altercation, and police have begun efforts to locate him. Family members of the deceased have alleged that Hanif Mia’s death resulted directly from the assault and have called for exemplary punishment for those responsible.

Hanif Mia’s son, Md Ripon, stated that there had been no previous land-related dispute between the two families. According to him, Abdul Barek began verbally abusing his father without provocation while the earth-cutting work was underway and later physically attacked him. Ripon said the family is preparing to file a murder case in connection with the incident.

As the accused remains unavailable, no statement could be obtained from him or his family members. Consequently, their version of events has not yet been officially recorded.

Raipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Mia said officers visited both the scene and the hospital immediately after receiving information about the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that a disagreement between neighbours may have contributed to the confrontation. However, he stressed that the exact circumstances surrounding the altercation and the precise cause of death would only be determined after a post-mortem examination.

Police have initiated the legal procedures required to prepare an inquest report and send the body for autopsy. The officer added that any written complaint or formal case submitted by the family will be investigated in accordance with the law, and appropriate legal action will follow based on the findings.

Incidents arising from seemingly minor neighbourhood disagreements occasionally escalate into serious violence in rural communities. Law-enforcement officials frequently emphasise the importance of resolving disputes through discussion, mediation or legal channels before they develop into physical confrontations. In this case, investigators are expected to rely on witness statements, medical findings and the forthcoming post-mortem report to establish the sequence of events and determine whether criminal charges will be pursued.
