The body of a 65-year-old man was recovered from Hatirjheel Lake in Dhaka on Wednesday morning. Identified as Mo. Azim Uddin, the deceased was found floating near Bridge 1, adjacent to the Rainbow Crossing. The discovery has prompted a police enquiry to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
Local authorities were alerted to the situation at around 8:00 AM when Ansar members on security duty spotted the body in the water. They immediately contacted the national emergency service number, 999, which dispatched a team from the Hatirjheel Police Station to the scene. Officers retrieved the body from the lake and commenced initial legal formalities before transferring it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Initially, the identity of the elderly man remained unknown. To resolve this, investigators utilised the automated Fingerprint Identification and Verification System. By cross-matching biometric data collected at the scene, the police successfully identified the deceased as Mo. Azim Uddin. Records indicate he was a resident of 306, Shimulbagh, located on Ulun Road in the West Rampura area of the capital.
Sub-Inspector Mo. Nazmul Islam and Sub-Inspector Abhi of Hatirjheel Police Station confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. Preliminary assessments suggest that the man died from drowning. However, match officials and investigators are remaining cautious, noting that a definitive conclusion can only be reached once the final post-mortem report is delivered by medical specialists.
Hatirjheel Lake is a prominent recreational centre in Dhaka, drawing hundreds of visitors daily. Due to its expansive perimeter, local security personnel, including Ansar members, routinely patrol the lakeside to ensure public safety. Police are currently speaking with the family of the deceased and local residents to track his movements prior to the incident, aiming to discover how he entered the water during the late hours of the night or early morning.
