At a discussion meeting held on the occasion of Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud (Tuku) delivered important remarks on language and national consciousness. He stated that to truly uphold the Bengali language, awareness, refinement, and historical responsibility in its use are essential. He urged everyone to unite in preserving the dignity of the mother tongue by moving away from the growing tendency to use non-Bengali slogans and expressions.
Speaking as the chief guest at the event organized by the Sirajganj District Administration at the Shilpakala Academy auditorium in the municipal town on Saturday noon, the minister said that the frequent use of foreign or non-Bengali slogans by the younger generation pains him. He noted that the Language Movement and the Liberation War were struggles to establish the linguistic and cultural rights of the Bengali people. In that context, maintaining purity in the practice of the Bengali language is a national responsibility.
He remarked, “If we truly wish to honor Bengali as our mother tongue, self-reflection in our language use is necessary. Words or slogans that have no historical connection with Bengali language and culture should not be used unnecessarily.” He further added that no nation can progress without being conscious of its own history. According to him, inadequate engagement with the history of the Language Movement and the Liberation War has weakened the growth of nationalism.
Speakers at the event also discussed the background of the Language Movement, the significance of the struggle for recognition of Bengali as a state language, and the global recognition of International Mother Language Day. They emphasized that language is not merely a tool of communication; it embodies a nation’s identity, culture, and heritage.
