EU Appoints Ivars Ijabs as Chief Observer in Bangladesh

In response to a formal invitation from Bangladeshi authorities, the European Commission’s High Representative and Vice-President, Kaja Kallas, has authorised the deployment of an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to monitor the upcoming Bangladeshi Parliamentary elections, scheduled for 12 February 2026.

The mission will be led by Ivars Ijabs, a Latvian Member of the European Parliament (MEP), who has been appointed Chief Observer. Speaking on Tuesday, 16 December, Ijabs said, “I am honoured to lead this EU Election Observation Mission to Bangladesh, which will provide an independent and impartial assessment of the electoral process.”

Highlighting the significance of the mission, Ijabs added, “This initiative represents a tangible example of the European Union’s support for the people of Bangladesh and their aspirations for stronger democratic institutions, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights.”

The EU Election Observation Mission aims to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability throughout the electoral process. As Chief Observer, Ijabs will oversee a team of international experts who will closely monitor voter registration, campaigning, polling, and vote counting. The findings and recommendations from the mission are expected to provide guidance for strengthening electoral integrity in Bangladesh.

This marks a continuation of the EU’s longstanding commitment to supporting democratic governance in Bangladesh, recognising the country’s evolving political landscape and the importance of credible elections in consolidating democratic norms.
