Evening Storms Expected Across Northern Regions

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert warning of gusty winds, thunderstorms, and rain across parts of northern and north-central Bangladesh, with wind speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour expected by Tuesday evening.

According to a special bulletin for inland river ports, valid until 6:00 p.m. on 24 March, regions including Rangpur, Dinajpur, and Mymensingh are likely to experience temporary squally conditions. Winds are forecast to blow from the west or north-west at speeds ranging between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour, accompanied by rain or thundershowers and occasional lightning.

In response to these conditions, river ports within the affected regions have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 1 (repeated). This signal indicates the possibility of moderate but potentially disruptive weather conditions, particularly for small and medium-sized vessels navigating inland waterways.

Meteorologists note that such pre-monsoon weather patterns are not uncommon during this time of year, when rising temperatures interact with moisture-laden air masses to produce short-lived but intense convective storms. These systems can develop rapidly, often bringing sudden gusts, lightning, and brief spells of heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, the broader five-day (120-hour) weather outlook issued at 9:00 a.m. indicates that an extension of a low-pressure system lies over West Bengal and adjoining areas. Additionally, the seasonal low persists over the South Bay of Bengal. These interacting systems are contributing to atmospheric instability across northern and north-eastern Bangladesh.

As a result, isolated areas within Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions may continue to experience intermittent gusty winds, lightning, and rain over the coming days. However, elsewhere in the country, conditions are expected to remain largely dry, with only partly cloudy skies.

Temperatures across Bangladesh are projected to rise slightly, both during the day and at night. This gradual warming trend, combined with atmospheric moisture, could further enhance the likelihood of isolated thunderstorms in vulnerable regions.

Authorities have urged caution, particularly for those engaged in river transport, agriculture, and outdoor activities. Sudden weather changes, especially lightning strikes and strong winds, may pose risks to life and property. Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay informed of updated forecasts and take necessary precautions to minimise potential hazards.
