A devastating incident in Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district has claimed the life of a 24-year-old expatriate returnee after he was struck by lightning during a sudden and violent thunderstorm. The tragedy occurred on Monday evening (30 March) at around 8:30pm in the Simna Bazar area of Tann Manipur village under Pattan Union, along the Simna–Brahmanbaria road.
The deceased has been identified as Abdur Rahman, the elder son of local resident Hebju Miah. He had returned to Bangladesh approximately four months ago after spending several years working in Saudi Arabia, with hopes of resettling at home and pursuing new livelihood opportunities alongside his family.

According to Professor Ali Azam Mir, who witnessed the incident, Abdur Rahman had taken shelter beneath a roadside tree as the storm intensified. It was at this vulnerable moment that lightning struck in the immediate vicinity, killing him on the spot.
Additional local accounts indicate that the young man had earlier been spending time at a nearby tea stall. Union Parishad member Akhtar Khan confirmed that Abdur Rahman was seen drinking tea shortly before the storm broke and remained in the vicinity as the weather began to worsen.
As the storm escalated, visibility deteriorated sharply due to heavy rain and strong winds, forcing people in the area to move cautiously or remain stationary under whatever limited shelter they could find. Once the storm subsided, residents later discovered that Abdur Rahman had been fatally struck.
