Explosions Shake Teknaf Border, Locals Plunged into Fear

Late on Friday night, residents of the border-adjacent Hnila area in Teknaf upazila, Cox’s Bazar, were shaken by the deafening sound of explosions emanating from across the border in Myanmar. Around midnight, the unsettling blasts, reportedly from the northern reaches of Rakhine State, sparked panic among the border community, waking many from their sleep and causing houses to tremble, according to local witnesses.

Abdur Rashid, a resident of the area, described the ordeal: “We heard two consecutive explosions from the Myanmar side. It felt as though the blasts occurred right next to our homes. Many of us were startled awake by the loud noise.”

Acting Chairman of Hnila Union Parishad, Md. Ali, confirmed that locals had reported the explosions to the authorities. He emphasised that while awareness is important, spreading panic is unnecessary. “Everyone should remain vigilant, but there is no need to be alarmed,” he advised.

At present, no damage to property or casualties have been reported. However, some residents speculate that the explosions may be linked to the upcoming general elections in Myanmar, suggesting that insurgent armed groups might be attempting to sow fear in the population.

Efforts to obtain a comment from Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Jasim Uddin, commanding officer of the 64th Battalion of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Ukhiya, were unsuccessful. Despite this, BGB personnel, in coordination with local administration, have maintained heightened vigilance along the border to ensure security and monitor the situation closely.

The incident has also raised broader concerns regarding the security of the border area and potential implications of Myanmar’s electoral activities spilling over into neighbouring regions. Authorities continue to stress public awareness and caution while assuring that the situation remains under control.
