A man accused of impersonating a police officer has been detained by local residents in Gopalganj’s Muksudpur upazila after he allegedly entered a house wearing a police jacket and attempted to intimidate the occupants. He was later handed over to the police, who recovered a toy pistol, a pair of handcuffs, a police coat and a knife from his possession.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Bongram village under Nonikhir Union in Muksudpur upazila.
The suspect has been identified as Rakib Sheikh, son of the late Hai Sheikh, a resident of the Bara Bhatta area of Nonikhir Union.
According to local sources, Rakib entered the home of a resident while dressed in what appeared to be an official police coat. Witnesses alleged that he threatened and intimidated members of the household, raising suspicion among local people about his identity and intentions.
As doubts grew over whether he was genuinely a police officer, residents confronted him and eventually detained him. During a search, they reportedly recovered a toy pistol, a pair of handcuffs and a knife from his possession before informing the police.
Officers from the Sindiaghat Police Outpost arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and took Rakib into custody for further investigation.
Aurangzeb, the officer in charge of the Sindiaghat Police Outpost, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect had been detained from the house of local resident Gagan Bala in Bongram village.
He said police seized a toy pistol, a pair of handcuffs, a police coat and a knife from the suspect. All of the recovered items have been taken into police custody as evidence.
Police have not yet said whether Rakib had previously used the police-style clothing and equipment in similar incidents or whether any additional complaints have been lodged against him. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged impersonation and are expected to determine whether he attempted to obtain any unlawful advantage by falsely presenting himself as a law enforcement officer.
Officials said legal proceedings have been initiated, and further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
Cases involving individuals impersonating police officers occasionally emerge in Bangladesh, prompting law enforcement agencies to remind the public to remain vigilant. Authorities advise citizens to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer if there are reasonable grounds for suspicion and to report such incidents promptly so that appropriate legal measures can be taken.
