BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that despite confusion, frustration and uncertainty, a possibility has emerged for the national election to be held. He stated that there is now an indication that the election may take place in February 2026, although a certain group is deliberately trying to create uncertainty in the country.
He made these remarks today, Sunday, while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion held at the National Press Club in the capital. The event was organised by the National Committee for Observing the Death Anniversary of Maulana Bhasani, formed by BNP, marking the 49th death anniversary of the veteran leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani.
Mirza Fakhrul said that despite confusion and uncertainty, the possibility of holding the election in February 2026 has become clearer. However, some groups are intentionally trying to disrupt the electoral atmosphere. They are raising various demands to obstruct, delay and halt the election. Yet, the people’s primary need is an elected government with a public mandate.
He urged political parties to support the election process without delay and create opportunities for the people to elect their representatives.
The BNP Secretary General said that the country’s economic condition is deteriorating day by day. Without an elected government, the situation will worsen further. He added that the law and order situation is also becoming unstable.
He alleged that tomorrow, Monday, a group is attempting to create chaos in the country centring the ‘genocide verdict of fascist Hasina’.
Warning that a faction might exploit political instability to push the country toward anarchy, Mirza Fakhrul said responsible behaviour from all political parties is essential regarding the election.
Economist Mahbub Ullah said at the discussion that although the government is strongly announcing the February election, ongoing developments indicate a “dark cloud”. If the election is not held on time, it may lead to a major disaster for the country, he observed.
He further expressed doubt about how understandable the four referendum questions would be for ordinary people. As a large portion of the population is still illiterate, it remains uncertain whether they will be able to comprehend these complex questions and make proper decisions.
He added that the distance created among the forces involved since the July uprising must be reduced. Democracy must be established to safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty.
He said that the people will not tolerate any obstruction to the path of democracy. Claiming that there was no public participation in Sheikh Hasina’s previous elections and that neighbouring India supported those elections, he emphasised the need for a stronger struggle for democracy.
He urged Chief Adviser of the interim government Professor Muhammad Yunus to ensure that the February election he has announced is successfully held, and that he takes necessary measures for its implementation.
The discussion was presided over by BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman. Speeches were delivered by Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Abdus Salam Azad and others.
