In a joint operation conducted on Tuesday evening, a local youth political leader was arrested in Boalmari Upazila, Faridpur, while in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The operation, carried out at around 9:00 pm in the Moyendia Bazar area, involved coordinated efforts by the Bangladesh Army and Boalmari Police, based on intelligence reports indicating the suspect’s illegal weapon possession in the locality.
According to army sources, the team was led by the Madhukhali Army Camp under the 15th Riverine Engineer Battalion, in close cooperation with the Boalmari Police. During the operation, security forces successfully apprehended the suspect and recovered a 7.65 mm pistol, a magazine, and two live rounds of ammunition. The arrested individual and the confiscated items were subsequently handed over to the Boalmari Police Station for further legal processing.
The detainee has been identified as Mahbubur Rahman Sajib, a resident of Moyendia village and the late Habibur Mia’s son. Sajib currently serves as the joint convener of a youth political organisation in the upazila, a position confirmed by local youth leader Minhazur Rahman Lipon.
Sub-Inspector Md. Shimul Molla of Boalmari Police Station stated at 10:45 am on Thursday that a case has been filed under the Arms Act. “Sajib is currently being interrogated to ascertain the source of the firearm and to determine whether he is connected to any organised criminal networks. He will be presented before the court in due course,” he added.
Regional authorities emphasised that such operations form part of preventive measures to ensure public safety and maintain law and order. Officials involved in the raid reportedly exercised heightened caution to avoid any harm to local residents.
