Fatal Clash Erupts During Local Mediation in Madaripur

A brutal killing has shaken the Rajair Upazila of Madaripur, following a local mediation meeting (salish) intended to resolve a minor theft dispute. What began as an attempt to settle the matter peacefully escalated into a violent confrontation, resulting in the death of fruit trader Zakir Sheikh and injuries to at least five others, including his son-in-law. In the aftermath, enraged locals set fire to several houses belonging to the alleged perpetrators, spreading fear and unrest across the community.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Madhyapara, within the Amgram Union. Zakir Sheikh, a resident of Majumdarkanndi village and a long-standing fruit merchant near the Rajair bus stand, was widely regarded by locals as diligent and peaceful.

According to sources, a few days earlier, Sohel Bepari’s home in the same area had been burglarised, prompting a police complaint. To resolve the dispute, influential local figures organised a salish on Tuesday morning. Instead of ending peacefully, the gathering turned deadly.

Eyewitnesses allege that during the mediation, Russel Bepari was attacked with sharp weapons. When Zakir Sheikh intervened to protect him, four others—including a woman—were beaten and injured. Later, under the pretext of continuing the salish, Zakir Sheikh was summoned to the site. Upon arrival, he was brutally attacked with machetes and other weapons, sustaining fatal injuries.

The injured were immediately taken to the Rajair Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty physician Dr. Al Yasa pronounced Zakir Sheikh dead. The other victims are currently receiving medical care.

Tensions in the area escalated quickly, with locals reportedly setting fire to at least four houses of the accused, causing significant property damage. Police and fire service personnel subsequently arrived, bringing the fires under control and attempting to restore order. Additional police have been deployed to maintain law and order, while the perpetrators remain at large.

Russel Bepari, one of the victims, described the attack as premeditated, expressing shock that a minor theft dispute could culminate in such a violent killing. He has demanded swift justice.

Inspector (Investigation) Md. Kutub Uddin of Rajair Police Station stated that the murder appears to have stemmed from land disputes combined with the recent theft incident. Authorities are actively working to identify and apprehend those responsible.
