A violent clash between two families in Santhia, Pabna, over a longstanding financial dispute has claimed the life of a 70-year-old man, while leaving five others injured. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in Khayerbaria village under Nandanpur Union. The deceased has been identified as Abdul Gafur, son of the late Jasim Uddin Pramanik, a resident of the same village.
According to local sources, the conflict began on Wednesday when Abdul Gafur’s son, Alam, had an altercation with 45-year-old Moyeen Uddin, son of Abu Taleb, over unpaid debt. Alam alleged that Moyeen had previously failed to repay borrowed money and had refused to settle a subsequent demand, sparking the initial confrontation.
The situation escalated on Thursday when Moyeen Uddin arrived at Alam’s residence with a group of supporters. A violent clash broke out between the two sides, resulting in multiple injuries. Abdul Gafur, Moyeen Uddin, 43-year-old Manik Hossain, 34-year-old Mayuri Khatun, and others sustained injuries. The injured were immediately taken to Santhia Upazila Health Complex, where duty doctors declared Abdul Gafur dead. Due to the severity of his injuries, Manik Hossain was transferred to Pabna Sadar Hospital for advanced medical care.
Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the incident, including Moyeen Uddin, his wife Reshma Khatun (34), Manik Hossain, and Sajib Hossain (25). Authorities are conducting further investigations and questioning several individuals involved.
Abdul Gafur’s son, Alam, claims that the attack on their household was motivated purely by the unpaid debt. He appealed for swift and fair justice, emphasising that his father’s death was a direct result of the assault.
Santhia police station’s Officer-in-Charge, Rafiqul Islam, stated, “The fatal clash was triggered by a financial dispute. Several people have been detained for questioning, and the deceased’s body has been sent to Pabna Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Legal proceedings are underway.”
