A trivial domestic disagreement escalated into a tragedy on Friday morning in Faridpur, as a young man was reportedly beaten to death by his neighbours. the incident, which centred on the installation of a clothesline in front of a residential property, has left the local community in the Goalchamot area in a state of profound shock.
According to Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Asad of the Kotwali Police Station, the altercation occurred on Molla Bari Road. the deceased has been identified as Jewel Ahmed, son of the late Monir Uddin. His younger brother, Sohel Ahmed, an expatriate worker who had recently returned home, was also brutally assaulted during the fray and remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
Roots of the Conflict
The dispute reportedly began when the family of Md. Sarfaraz, a local scrap metal trader of non-Bengali heritage (commonly referred to as Bihari), attempted to string up a rope for drying clothes directly across the entrance of Jewel’s residence. Family members and witnesses alleged that Sarfaraz’s relatives were intentionally boisterous and provocative during the process.
When Jewel and his brother attempted to protest the obstruction of their walkway, the verbal spat rapidly turned violent. Members of Sarfaraz’s household allegedly armed themselves with wooden sticks and iron rods, launching a coordinated attack on the two brothers.
