A profound sense of grief has gripped the local community following a catastrophic railway accident on the Akhaura railway section. On the morning of Tuesday, 3 March, a 50-year-old gentleman, identified as Rahim Mia, tragically lost his life after being struck by an intercity service in the vicinity of Mandbagh railway station.
Circumstances of the Tragedy
The deceased, a resident of the Shashidal area within the Brahmanpara Upazila of Cumilla, was the son of Abul Hashem Mia. According to official reports corroborated by local authorities, the fatal encounter occurred at the southern outer perimeter of the Mandbagh station.
Mr. Mia was reportedly traversing the railway tracks on foot when the Upakul Express, an intercity service bound for the capital city of Dhaka from Noakhali, approached at significant speed. Due to the rapid velocity of the locomotive and the victim’s proximity to the active line, he was unable to retreat to a position of safety. The ensuing collision was instantaneous; the sheer force of the impact resulted in a “divided” fatality, and Mr. Mia was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency Response and Formalities
Following the incident, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Akhaura Railway Police Station, SM Sofiqul Islam, arrived to oversee the recovery efforts. A specialized railway police unit was dispatched to the site, successfully recovering the remains by approximately 12:45 PM.
“The victim was walking along the permanent way when he was intercepted by the Dhaka-bound intercity train. It was a harrowing incident that resulted in immediate loss of life,” noted OC SM Sofiqul Islam.
In a gesture of administrative compassion, the railway authorities opted to bypass a formal post-mortem examination. As the bereaved family expressed no suspicion of foul play or external negligence, the remains were released to the next of kin to facilitate traditional burial rites.
