Father and Two Sons Poisoned After Facebook Live Rant

A deeply distressing incident in Jhalkathi has left a father and his two young sons in critical condition after the man allegedly consumed poison and administered the same substance to his children following a live broadcast on Facebook. The incident took place on Tuesday (31 March) evening in the Sutalori area of Jhalkathi municipality, prompting shock and concern within the local community.

The father, identified locally as Rakib, reportedly went live on Facebook shortly before the incident, during which he made a series of emotional and accusatory statements directed at an individual named “Sagar”. In the live video, he accused the man of abandoning his responsibilities after achieving personal success and alleged betrayal and neglect.

During the broadcast, Rakib is said to have uttered distressing remarks, including: “You have done everything for your own benefit. You have become established, but you never cared about us. In sorrow and pain, I am leaving this world. May you remain alone in a peaceful world.”

Moments after the live session, the tragic incident unfolded inside his residence.

According to local residents, the situation came to light shortly before the Maghrib prayer when screams were heard coming from Rakib’s home. Neighbours rushed to the scene and discovered Rakib along with his two sons—identified as Nibir and Abir—suffering from severe distress and convulsions. A strong smell of poison was reportedly detected inside the house.

The victims were immediately rescued and taken to Jhalkathi Sadar Hospital. Due to their critical condition, they were later referred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, where they remain under medical care.

Rakib’s uncle and neighbour, Jewel, described the chaotic scene following the incident. He said that the family rushed to the house after hearing cries for help and found all three individuals in a critical state. He confirmed that they were immediately transported to hospital by locals before being transferred to Barishal due to the severity of their condition.

Jewel further stated that he did not recognise any close acquaintance named “Sagar” mentioned in the Facebook live video. He also noted that there was no known association between Rakib and any individual by that name within their social circle, raising further questions about the context of the allegations made during the broadcast.

It has also been reported that Rakib’s wife was not present at home at the time of the incident.

Local residents have expressed shock over the episode and have called for a thorough investigation into both the circumstances leading up to the poisoning and the identity of the individual referred to in the live broadcast. Concerns have also been raised regarding the potential influence of social media in escalating personal grievances into extreme actions.

Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge of Nolchhity Police Station, Ariful Alam, confirmed that authorities are aware of the incident. He stated that legal action would be taken if a formal complaint is lodged and added that the matter is currently being monitored.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the recovery of the father and his two sons, while law enforcement attempts to determine the underlying cause and any possible external involvement or provocation linked to the tragic event.
