A Saudi Arabia-based Bangladeshi expatriate was killed in a road accident while travelling to buy a birthday cake for his daughter, turning what should have been a family celebration into a tragedy. Al Amin, 40, died after a bus struck the motorcycle he was riding in Shahrashti upazila of Chandpur district on Thursday evening.
He was expected to return to Saudi Arabia on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred at around 7pm on 8 October in the Moutabari area, along the Chandpur–Cumilla regional highway. Al Amin, a resident of Krishnapur village in Shahrashti, was heading towards Hajiganj to buy a cake for his daughter’s birthday when the collision took place.
According to Bahar Uddin, a relative of the deceased, Al Amin had one daughter and had left home on his motorcycle to purchase the cake. While travelling through Moutabari, a bus struck the motorcycle, leaving Al Amin and another passenger, identified as Hridoy, 19, seriously injured.
Local residents rushed to the scene and rescued the two men before taking them to Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Doctors at the facility declared Al Amin dead on arrival. Hridoy was receiving medical care following the collision. Further details about his condition were not immediately available.
Al Amin’s death has left his family facing a devastating loss just days before he was due to return to his workplace overseas. His planned journey to Saudi Arabia on Sunday morning had been approaching, but he had first gone out to prepare for his daughter’s birthday. What began as an ordinary family errand ended in a fatal accident.
For his daughter and other relatives, the circumstances surrounding his death make the loss particularly painful. A birthday cake, intended to mark a happy occasion, became part of a story of sudden bereavement. The family’s plans for the celebration were overshadowed by the news that Al Amin would not be returning home.
The accident has also drawn attention to the risks faced by motorcyclists travelling on busy regional highways, where motorcycles share road space with larger vehicles such as buses. Collisions involving vehicles of different sizes can result in severe injuries, particularly for motorcycle riders and passengers who have limited physical protection.
Safe driving practices, appropriate speeds and adequate distances between vehicles are important measures for reducing the risk of such incidents. Establishing the precise circumstances of a collision, however, requires a proper investigation rather than assumptions about how it occurred.
Shahrashti Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the accident and said preparations were under way to file a case in connection with the incident.
No further details about the cause of the collision or any potential legal action were immediately available.
For Al Amin’s family, the immediate concern is the loss of a husband, father and relative. His journey to buy a cake for his daughter’s birthday was meant to be a small act of love. Instead, it became his final journey, leaving a family to confront a loss they could not have anticipated.
