In a remarkable display of parental responsibility, a father in Chāndpur’s Motlob South Upazila handed his wayward son, Ashraful, over to the police on Friday, 20 February, after the young man’s persistent involvement in drug abuse and criminal activities. The incident took place in Nolua village during the afternoon.
Former councillor Ahijul Munsi, Ashraful’s father, explained that his son had long been involved in theft and various other offences. “He spent his days wandering with friends addicted to drugs, repeatedly disrupting the peace of our community,” Munsi said. Despite multiple warnings, Ashraful showed no sign of reform. “His persistent misconduct and indecent behaviour have brought shame upon our family and relatives. I could no longer face the community on his behalf. Out of desperation, I felt compelled to hand him over to the authorities,” he added.
Local residents confirmed that Ashraful had frequently been the subject of community mediation sessions due to his antisocial behaviour. Beyond theft, he was involved in drug use and other criminal activities. On the night of 18 February, Ashraful, along with two accomplices, reportedly broke into a local shop and stole cash and goods. His repeated misdeeds had instilled fear among villagers, while his family endured repeated social humiliation. Frustrated and helpless, his father ultimately resorted to involving law enforcement.
Motlob South police station officer-in-charge, Md. Hafizur Rahman Manik, said, “Ashraful was brought to the station by his father and formally surrendered. A case is now underway, and appropriate legal action will follow.”

This case underscores that, in certain circumstances, protecting personal and social dignity may necessitate difficult decisions, setting an important precedent for responsible conduct within the community.
