Father kills son with an axe in Jessore

Tragedy struck in Jhenaidah’s Chougachha Upazila when a young man, Tarikul Islam, 35, succumbed to injuries sustained after being struck on the head with an axe by his own father. The incident occurred at the family home in Jahangirpur village, Singhjhuli Union. Tarikul passed away on Thursday morning, 22 January, at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment.

Local sources reported that the incident took place on Tuesday morning, 20 January, when Tarikul, while sitting outside his home near a small grocery shop, fell asleep. As customers gradually left the shop, his father, Robiul Islam, reportedly became angry upon seeing his son asleep and, in a fit of rage, struck him on the head with an axe.

Following the attack, family members and local residents rushed Tarikul to Chougachha Upazila Health Complex for emergency care. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently referred to the 250-bed Jessore General Hospital. When his condition continued to deteriorate, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Tarikul passed away the following morning.

The victim’s uncle, Asadul Islam, has filed a formal case with Chougachha Police Station. The Officer-in-Charge of Chougachha, Rezaul Karim, confirmed the incident and stated that the police are investigating the matter.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting issues of familial violence and the urgent need for awareness around anger management and domestic disputes. Neighbours and villagers expressed their sorrow and disbelief at the fatal outcome of what began as a domestic argument.
