The serene landscape of Ramu Upazila in Cox’s Bazar was shattered on Monday night by the gruesome murder of an easy-bike driver. The victim, identified as Md. Babul, 35, was discovered with his throat slit in a secluded area of the South Mithachhari union. This heinous act, suspected to be a robbery gone wrong, has left a family destitute and a community gripped by fear.
A Brutal End to a Working Shift
On the evening of 26 January, local residents of the South Para neighbourhood were horrified to find Babul’s mutilated body discarded near the roadside. Babul was a resident of Swapnotari Adarshagram village in the Rashidnagar union and the son of the late Abdu Salam.
The victim was a dedicated family man, working long hours to support his wife and three children. His younger brother, struggling to come to terms with the loss, noted that Babul had left home that evening in high spirits, seeking to earn a few extra Taka before the day’s end. “I spoke to him just before he departed,” he lamented. “Never did I imagine that a simple day of work would end in such a barbaric fashion.”
Hijacking Suspected as Primary Motive
While the investigation is in its infancy, the prevailing theory held by both the police and local residents is that Babul was the victim of a violent vehicle hijacking. The easy-bike (an electric three-wheeler) he was operating was missing from the scene, leading authorities to believe that the assailants murdered him to facilitate the theft of the vehicle and ensure no witness remained to identify them.
