All five members of a family have died following a gas explosion caused by a pipeline leakage in Fathullah, Narayanganj. The victims—a father, mother, and their three children—succumbed to burn injuries over several days at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
According to hospital sources, the final death occurred on Friday (15 May) morning when Salma Akter (32), the mother, died while undergoing treatment. She was the last surviving member of the family.
The sequence of deaths began on Monday, when the family’s head, Abul Kalam (35), died first. He was followed by his youngest daughter, Kotha (4), who died on Wednesday. On Thursday, the elder son Munna (12) died in the morning, and the middle daughter Muni (7) passed away later the same day. All victims had been admitted in critical condition following the explosion.
Medical officials at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery confirmed that Salma Akter had suffered burns to approximately 60 percent of her body, while Muni had burns covering around 35 percent. All patients were reported to be in a severely critical condition from the outset of treatment.
The incident occurred early on Sunday morning in the ground floor of a nine-storey residential building in North Bhuiya, Giridhara area of Fathullah. Preliminary findings suggest that gas accumulated inside the room overnight due to leakage from a pipeline. The explosion is believed to have been triggered when a gas stove was lit or an electrical switch was turned on, resulting in a sudden blast and fire that severely burned all five family members.
Abul Kalam worked as a vegetable seller. The family originally came from Barukdia village in Bauphal upazila of Patuakhali district. They were residing in a rented apartment in Narayanganj for livelihood purposes.
