The president of Feni Government College chapter of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s student wing, Nomanul Haque Noman, has been expelled from his post following the leak of an alleged phone conversation in which he demanded extortion money. The decision was confirmed on Tuesday (24 March) through a press release signed by the central office secretary of the student wing, Jahangir Alam.
According to the press statement, the Central Council of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Student League decided to remove Noman from his post for violating organisational discipline. In the same statement, senior vice-president Mahmudul Hasan Bhuiya was appointed as the acting president to ensure continuity and organisational stability. The move was approved by the student wing’s president, Rokibul Islam Rakib, and general secretary, Nasir Uddin Nasir.
Local sources reported that the controversy emerged after a nearly four-minute audio clip circulated on social media. The clip, which originates from Feni Sadar’s Panchgachhia Union, allegedly captures Noman demanding 16,000 taka from Iftakhar Tahad Iftu, the joint general secretary of Rampur Nasir Memorial Degree College student wing, for transporting soil along the Ilashpur road over an eight-day period.
In the audio, Iftu questions the demand, stating: “Is it acceptable to pay money for operating vehicles for our own party members?” Noman responds, “It’s just pocket money for the juniors; everyone pays.” He also advises operating the vehicles after 10 pm to avoid negative reactions from locals. The exchange further reveals that Iftu had previously been asked for payments, which Noman claims were passed on to senior members and allocated for club expenses.
However, Noman has denied any wrongdoing, claiming the incident occurred about a month ago and that no extortion was intended. He stated that he was only trying to resolve a situation when some local youths stopped a soil transport vehicle, and that Iftu later called him voluntarily to proceed with the transport.
Iftu, in contrast, maintains that Noman directly demanded money and threatened that the vehicles would not be allowed to run otherwise.
Salah Uddin Mamun, president of Feni district student wing, told the press that the expulsion was executed following orders from the central council. Mahmudul Hasan has been given interim leadership responsibilities, while no directives have yet been issued regarding other leaders involved in the soil business. Mamun added that if evidence confirms involvement of any student wing members in illegal soil extraction or extortion, strict organisational measures will be enforced.
