The Fire Service and Civil Defence has established a five-member investigation committee to examine the recent fire incident at Korail slum, Dhaka. The committee has been instructed to complete its investigation and submit a report within 15 working days, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Shahjahan Shikder, Media Officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, stated that the formation of the committee reflects the authority’s commitment to identify the causes of the fire, assess damages, and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The committee is headed by Md Mamunur Rashid, Deputy Director (Operations and Maintenance) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence. The other members include:
| Member | Designation |
|---|---|
| Kazi Nazmuzzaman | Assistant Director |
| Atish Chakma | Deputy Assistant Director, Dhaka Zone-2 |
| Md Nazim Uddin | Senior Station Officer, Tejgaon |
| Md Sohrab Hossain | Warehouse Inspector, Dhaka-23 |
The committee is expected to conduct a comprehensive investigation, including on-site inspections, interviews with witnesses and residents, and review of fire safety protocols and equipment. It will also analyse the response time and efficiency of the emergency services during the incident.
Korail, one of Dhaka’s largest slum areas, is densely populated, making fire incidents particularly hazardous. Previous fires in the area have caused significant loss of property and displacement of residents, underscoring the importance of timely investigations and improved safety measures.
Officials emphasised that the investigation aims not only to determine the cause of the fire, but also to propose preventive measures to minimise risks in other high-density settlements across the city. The committee will submit its findings and recommendations to the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters within the 15-working-day deadline.
Residents and local stakeholders have welcomed the committee’s formation, expressing hope that the inquiry will result in better fire safety management and disaster preparedness in Dhaka’s slum areas. Authorities have also assured the public that appropriate action will be taken based on the committee’s recommendations.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and called for cooperation from residents in maintaining fire safety standards.
