Fisherman’s Body Recovered from Tetulia River

A tragic accident claimed the life of a 65-year-old fisherman, Babul Sikdar, in Bauphal Upazila, Patuakhali, when his body was recovered from the Tetulia River on Sunday, 22 March. Divers retrieved his body at approximately 11:00 a.m. near the ghat of Mominpur Gazi Bari in Keshpur Union.

Babul Sikdar, a lifelong resident of Ward 4, Sikdar Bari in Dhulia Union, had earned his living from fishing in the Tetulia River for decades, contributing significantly to the local fish trade and economy.

Circumstances of the Accident

Local reports indicate that the incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, 21 March, coinciding with the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. Sikdar’s fishing boat, moored at the river ghat, was carried away by the strong current of the rising tide. In an attempt to secure the drifting vessel, Sikdar entered the river and began swimming towards it. However, the forceful current and rising waves overpowered him, causing him to lose control and submerge suddenly, vanishing beneath the water.

Despite immediate efforts by nearby residents to rescue him, Sikdar could not be reached. A professional diving team was summoned to conduct a thorough search. Nearly 24 hours later, his body was located and recovered from the river.

Community Reaction

The incident has cast a sombre pall over the local community, particularly as it occurred during the festive period of Eid. Acting Chairman of Dhulia Union Parishad, Md. Zahirul Islam, confirmed the tragedy and conveyed the collective grief of the residents:

“Such a tragic event during Eid has brought immense sorrow to the area. The family is mourning deeply, and the entire community shares in their grief.”

Sikdar was well regarded in his community for his dedication to fishing and his role in sustaining the local economy. His sudden death underscores the inherent dangers faced by fishermen, especially during periods of strong tidal flows and festive seasons when many venture onto rivers despite the risks.

Authorities have urged local fishermen to remain vigilant during seasonal tides and to adopt proper safety measures, including life jackets and securing vessels, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
