In the Sylhet division, five more children have died with measles-like symptoms over a four-day period during the Eid holidays, according to a report issued by the office of the Divisional Health Director on Sunday. The deaths occurred between Tuesday and the following four days.
With these latest cases, the total number of child deaths associated with measles-like symptoms in the division has reached 60 since January. The report further states that 69 new patients with similar symptoms were admitted to hospitals within the last 24 hours.
The five deceased children were identified as eight-month-old Abdulloh Al Mahin, son of Masum Ahmed of Islampur Union in Zakiganj Upazila; six-month-old Arifa, daughter of Nazmul Haque of Osmaninagar Upazila in the same district; nine-month-old Arim, son of Imran Ahmed from Alampur in Chhatak Upazila of Sunamganj; six-month-old Nusifa, daughter of Ataur Rahman from Mollapara Madhupur in Sylhet Sadar Upazila; and five-month-old Abdulloh Al Jaian, son of Abul Kashem from Nurpur in Osmaninagar.
According to the Divisional Health Director’s office, these five deaths were recorded from the 26th of the month onwards. Among the total 60 deaths reported since January, four cases have been medically confirmed as measles, while the remaining cases are recorded as having measles-like symptoms.
Hospital admission data for the past 24 hours indicates that out of 69 newly admitted patients, 31 were admitted to Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmad Hospital, while 17 were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Additionally, 12 patients were admitted to Moulvibazar District Sadar Hospital, and 9 patients were admitted to Ragib-Rabeya Medical College Hospital.
Health authorities further report that approximately 265 patients with measles-like symptoms are currently undergoing treatment across various hospitals in the Sylhet division. The highest number of admitted patients is recorded at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital with 106 cases, followed by Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmad Hospital with 67 cases. Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital is also treating 22 patients.
