Five Jamaat Candidates in Comilla Possess Assets Exceeding One Crore

Ahead of the 13th national parliamentary elections in Comilla, five candidates nominated by Jamaat-e-Islami have declared assets exceeding one crore taka each. This includes both immovable and movable properties, highlighting significant wealth among the party’s contenders in the district.

The candidate with the highest declared assets is Syed A.K.M. Sarwar Uddin Siddiqui of Comilla-9, who also serves as Secretary of Comilla South District Jamaat. His total assets amount to 2.94 crore taka. However, he also carries substantial liabilities, with bank loans amounting to 2.6 crore taka in his name.

In contrast, the candidates with the lowest total assets are Md. Moniruzzaman of Comilla-1 and Md. Mosharaf Hossain of Comilla-7, each declaring assets of 42.7 lakh taka. Interestingly, despite his modest total assets, Moniruzzaman tops the list in annual income, earning 25.72 lakh taka per year, while Kazi Din Mohammad of Comilla-6 reports the lowest annual income at 5.28 lakh taka.

Of Comilla’s 11 parliamentary constituencies, Jamaat candidates filed nominations in 10. One candidate, Md. Yusuf Sohel of Comilla-3 (Muradnagar), had his nomination cancelled on 3 January due to incomplete disclosures in his affidavit.

Analysis of the nine submitted affidavits reveals that six candidates listed their profession as “business,” including Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher of Comilla-11, who specified “business (medical services).” Three candidates identified themselves as teachers: Mobarak Hossain (Comilla-5), Mosharaf Hossain (Comilla-7), and Shafiqul Alam (Helal) (Comilla-8).

Regarding educational qualifications, two candidates hold PhDs (Mobarak Hossain and Sarwar Uddin Siddiqui), four have master’s degrees, one has a bachelor’s degree, and Taher holds an MBBS degree. Mosharaf Hossain, despite his teaching profession, did not provide educational details in his affidavit.
