Mymensingh, Bangladesh – In a shocking incident on Tuesday afternoon, five police officers were brutally attacked in Mymensingh city while attempting to apprehend a criminal suspect. The suspect, handcuffed at the time, was forcibly freed by assailants and later seven individuals, including the suspect’s father, were arrested following a coordinated operation by police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The incident occurred at Digarkanda Fishery Mor, when a five-member police team, led by investigation officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Farid Ahmed of Kotwali Model Police Station, attempted to arrest Ariful Islam, son of local resident Sagar Ali, in connection with an ongoing assault case. The suspect was accused, along with others, of severely injuring a man named Russel several days prior. Russel is currently receiving critical care at Pangu Hospital in Dhaka.
During the operation, local residents, allegedly led by Sagar Ali, attacked the police using sticks and homemade weapons. The assailants struck five officers, leaving them seriously injured, and forcibly took Ariful Islam away despite him being handcuffed. SI Farid Ahmed was among those admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital’s Ward 6. The remaining officers received primary treatment at the hospital, according to Acting Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazmus Sakib of Kotwali Model Police Station.
Police and RAB personnel, with support from the army, quickly arrived at the scene, rescued the injured officers, and regained control of the area. The ensuing crackdown led to the arrest of Sagar Ali, Ariful’s father, and six other individuals implicated in the attack. Authorities stated that fear of reprisals has caused many men in the area to temporarily leave their homes.
