The grand tribute, originally scheduled to take place on 18 July at the National Theatre Hall auditorium of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, has been suspended. Both the iconic vocalist and the state-run cultural academy confirmed the postponement, citing the severe environmental crisis affecting millions across the country.

Speaking to the press, Runa Laila expressed her deep concern for the flood victims, noting that hosting a celebratory event at this time would be inappropriate. The academy’s public relations officer, Sabina Yasmin, stated that the organisers are closely monitoring the crisis. If conditions improve, they tentatively plan to host the event on 25 July, though this remains strictly dependent on the pace of recovery in the affected regions.

Race Against Time Ahead of Australian Tour

The postponement has left organisers with a exceptionally tight window to reschedule the event. Runa Laila is scheduled to depart for Australia on 29 July, accompanied by her troupe of instrumentalists, for a highly anticipated concert tour.

This tour represents her first musical appearances in Australia in nearly a decade, with major performances scheduled for:

• Sydney: 1 August

• Melbourne: 8 August

Shilpakala Academy officials are keen to host the tribute before her departure at the end of the month. However, they have reiterated that public safety and the national flood relief efforts remain the absolute priorities, meaning any rescheduled date remains highly flexible.

A Historic Solo Performance on Hold

The delayed event carries immense historical weight for the country’s cultural landscape. Despite a glittering career spanning more than sixty years, this gala will mark Runa Laila’s very first solo performance at the Shilpakala Academy.

The planned programme is designed to be an intimate evening of music and storytelling. The songstress is set to perform some of her most iconic hits, whilst fellow artists, close colleagues, and distinguished guests will share personal memories of her journey. Runa Laila herself highlighted the importance of the event, stating that documenting these musical milestones is essential for passing the country’s rich cultural legacy down to the younger generation.

The tribute is part of an ongoing state-sponsored initiative launched last year by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The programme seeks to celebrate the lifetimes of the nation’s most influential cultural pioneers whilst they are still active.

The series began last September with a tribute to the revered singer Sabina Yasmin, followed most recently by a grand ceremony for the veteran vocalist Syed Abdul Hadi in June. Runa Laila’s selection as the third recipient of this state honour underlines her unparalleled status as a true pioneer of South Asian music.
