Public Health Fears Rise as Rabid Dogs Terrorise Sherpur

Twenty-nine people, including vulnerable young children, have been left injured following a sustained rampage by two aggressive stray dogs across several neighbourhoods in the Nakla municipality of Sherpur district. The stray animals also mauled at least six head of cattle during the attacks, which began early in the morning and continued unabated until late Wednesday afternoon.

Among the hospitalised casualties are five-year-old Rayan, son of Abdur Rahman; five-year-old Mim, daughter of Khalilur Rahman; nine-year-old Jhinuk, daughter of Abdur Rahim; nine-year-old Jihad, son of Miraj Uddin; thirteen-year-old Sojib, son of Lutfar Rahman; and twenty-year-old Riaz Ahmed, son of Firoz Ali. The victims represent a broad demographic, encompassing men, women, and school-aged children drawn from various parts of the municipality.

Terrified Neighbourhoods Bear the Brunt of Canine Attacks

Local residents reported that panic gripped the area at dawn when a dog, displaying clear symptoms of rabies, began sprinting erratically through major residential enclaves. The animal launched unprovoked assaults on unsuspecting pedestrians and commuters in the Green Road, Daripara, and Uttar Kayda sectors. Shortly thereafter, a second stray dog joined the onslaught, attacking individuals on public roads and biting livestock grazing in open fields.

In response to the growing danger, frightened community members mobilised to neutralise the threat. By late afternoon, a local group managed to corner and kill one of the diseased animals. The incident has heightened long-standing public anxieties regarding the poorly managed stray dog population in the district, forcing families to keep children indoors.

Emergency Medical Response and Municipal Aid

Onlookers swiftly rescued the casualties and brought them to the Nakla Upazila Health Complex, where medical teams administered emergency first aid and wound care. Due to the deep tissue damage caused by the lacerations, two patients required urgent transfers to the Sherpur District Sadar Hospital for advanced clinical interventions.

Dr Mohammad Golam Mostafa, the Nakla Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed that the local health complex had never before received such an unprecedented influx of dog-bite patients within a single day. He issued a public health warning, advising citizens to wash animal wounds with running water and soap for at least fifteen minutes immediately before seeking hospital treatment.

Concurrently, the Nakla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Md Jahangir Alam, stated that the Nakla Municipality has ensured an uninterrupted reserve of Anti-Rabies Vaccines (ARV) at the public hospital. These life-saving immunisations are being provided to all victims completely free of charge. The municipal authorities have also committed to reimbursing the costs of any supplementary medications that patients are forced to purchase from private pharmacies.

Policy Failure Sparks Demands for Mass Vaccination

The mass attack has triggered deep public resentment over the prolonged suspension of canine vaccination and sterilisation initiatives in the region. Distressed residents have blamed the municipal authorities, arguing that the complete absence of routine immunisation drives has directly resulted in an uptick of rabid behavior among stray packs.

Epidemiological experts reiterate that mass canine inoculation remains the only viable strategy to eliminate rabies transmission to humans. With public anger mounting, community leaders in Sherpur are now putting pressure on the government to reinstate comprehensive veterinary immunisation programmes to avert future public health emergencies.
