Fog and cold intensify in Dhaka; Meteorological Department indicates how long it will last

The capital city of Dhaka experienced another chilly and fog-laden morning on Saturday, echoing the conditions of the previous day, Friday. While the sun had briefly broken through the clouds yesterday afternoon, it quickly disappeared again, leaving residents shivering under the persistent winter chill. Today, temperatures in the capital have fallen slightly compared to Friday, intensifying the cold spell.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the current weather pattern is expected to persist for the next two to three days. The forecast suggests that, unless rainfall occurs, the widespread fog is unlikely to dissipate. However, the department has predicted intermittent sunshine in the capital today, which may last longer than yesterday’s brief appearance.

In Dhaka, the minimum temperature recorded this morning was 12.5°C, down from 13.3°C yesterday. Across the country, the lowest temperatures were registered at 9°C in three locations: Badalgachi in Naogaon, Pabna, and Rajshahi. By comparison, yesterday’s nationwide minimum was 8°C in Jessore. Meteorologists note that the overall trend in the past two days shows a gradual rise in temperatures in most regions, though Dhaka has bucked this pattern with a slight decline.

Md. Hafizur Rahman, a meteorologist at BMD, explained that limited sunlight in Dhaka has contributed to the drop in temperature. He anticipates that the sun may appear more prominently around midday, providing temporary relief from the morning cold.

Fog remains widespread across the capital, as well as in parts of the north-eastern region, including Sylhet. In contrast, areas such as Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet, and Rangpur are experiencing relatively clear conditions. The meteorologist cautioned that, in the absence of rainfall, the current foggy conditions over Dhaka and the north-eastern regions may persist for several more days.

The BMD classifies cold waves according to minimum temperatures: mild cold occurs between 8.1°C and 10°C, moderate cold ranges from 6.1°C to 8°C, severe cold falls between 4.1°C and 6°C, and extreme cold is recorded below 4°C.
