Former Army General Masud Uddin Arrested in Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) has arrested Lieutenant General (Retd.) Masud Uddin Chowdhury, a highly prominent military figure during the 2007–2008 caretaker government period, from his residence in the Baridhara DOHS area late Monday night.

Shafiqul Islam, head of the DMP’s Detective Branch, confirmed to Prothom Alo on Tuesday morning that Chowdhury faces five separate cases. He added that the former general would be formally presented before the court, although specific details of the charges were not immediately disclosed.

Chowdhury’s career spans significant military, diplomatic, and political roles. In 2007, he served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 9th Infantry Division, playing a pivotal role during the caretaker government’s crackdown on serious crime and anti-corruption operations. Later, he became the coordinator of the National Coordination Committee, overseeing several high-profile initiatives aimed at restoring law and order. His military service culminated in promotion to Lieutenant General.

In 2008, he was appointed Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Australia, a post he held for multiple terms after successive extensions granted by the Awami League government. Following his retirement, Chowdhury engaged in several business ventures in Dhaka, including restaurants and commercial enterprises.

Politically, he entered parliament as a nominee of the Jatiya Party (JP), representing Feni-3 for two consecutive terms (2018 and 2024). Interestingly, in the 2018 11th National Parliamentary Elections, he initially sought a nomination from the Awami League before joining the Jatiya Party and successfully contesting the seat. He also holds a position on JP’s policymaking executive committee.

The table below summarises his key roles across military, diplomatic, and political spheres:

Chowdhury’s arrest marks a notable moment in Bangladesh’s intertwined military, diplomatic, and political history. Authorities, including the DMP and relevant investigative agencies, are prepared to pursue legal proceedings in line with the ongoing cases against him.

The arrest has sparked widespread discussion across political and social spheres, given Chowdhury’s influential role during the caretaker government and his subsequent political impact. Analysts suggest that this development may have both symbolic and practical implications for contemporary political dynamics in the country.
