In a disturbing incident on Sunday night, Shafiqul Rahman (55), a former joint general secretary of the BNP in Ward 16 and a local businessman, was shot in Dhaka’s Panthapath area. The attack took place at the makeshift floating shoe market on the pavement opposite the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex.
According to local sources, Shafiqul was attending to his shoe business when an unidentified assailant fired at him around 9:30 p.m. The bullet struck the palm of his left hand, causing serious injury. The identity and motive of the attacker remain unclear, and the police are yet to ascertain who carried out the shooting.
Shafiqul was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at approximately 11:00 p.m. by those accompanying him, including Shah Poran, who provided preliminary information to the hospital’s emergency department. Doctors have kept him under observation, and his treatment is ongoing.
Inspector Md. Faruk, officer-in-charge of the hospital police outpost, confirmed:
“The injured Shafiqul Rahman is currently under treatment in the emergency department. Our investigation has begun, but the attacker has not yet been identified.”
Locals reported that Shafiqul had been a long-standing shoe supplier in the Panthapath area. In recent days, extortionists had allegedly targeted him, demanding protection money. Sources suggest that the attack may have been motivated by a combination of his business activities and political connections.
