A former market association president and spice trader, Abdur Rahman, aged 55, was shot dead in broad daylight in the Shyambazar area of Sutrapur, Old Dhaka. Abdur Rahman, who had previously served as president of the Shyambazar Kachabazar Owners’ Association, was attacked on Thursday, 11 December, shortly after midday. The shooting occurred in front of the Maula Box Eye Hospital, where unidentified assailants opened fire on him.
Local residents reported that the attack took place around 12 pm. Witnesses immediately rushed to Abdur Rahman’s aid and transported him to the emergency department of Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital. Doctors at the hospital confirmed his death upon arrival. The sudden killing has sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly among traders who regarded him as a well-known and respected businessman in the area.
Family members revealed that Abdur Rahman had hurriedly left his home shortly after lunch, at around quarter to twelve. Soon after, locals heard a loud explosion-like sound. Initially, his family believed it might have been caused by a transmitter explosion. However, within minutes, they received a phone call informing them that Abdur Rahman had been shot. The family has expressed suspicion towards an individual named Nayan. A relative stated that many residents saw Nayan fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. The family has demanded a thorough investigation and proper justice if he is found to be involved.
Officer-in-Charge Md Motiur Rahman of Sutrapur Police Station confirmed the incident to গণমাধ্যম, stating that Abdur Rahman was shot near Maula Box Eye Hospital around noon. Police were promptly dispatched to both the crime scene and the hospital as the investigation began. The OC added that Abdur Rahman was a respected resident of Shyambazar and a former president of the Kachabazar Owners’ Association. Authorities are actively working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
Following the incident, the neighbourhood has been gripped by grief and heightened anxiety. Residents and traders have voiced concerns about safety after the sudden loss of a familiar and respected community figure. Police have deployed additional patrols in the area to maintain order and reassure the public. Local people have also cordoned off the scene and are assisting officers with the initial investigation.
Authorities have pledged that the perpetrators will be swiftly identified and brought to justice. The murder has intensified local fears, increasing the urgency of the investigation and the need for public vigilance in the area.
