The High Court has granted bail to former textiles and jute minister Abdul Latif Siddique in an anti-terrorism case filed at Shahbagh Police Station in the capital.
The order was issued on Thursday (6 November) by a High Court bench comprising Justice A S M Abdul Mobin and Justice Sagir Hossain.
Latif Siddique’s lawyer, Z I Khan Panna, stated that the ruling removes any remaining barriers to his release. Assistant Attorneys General Ibrahim Khalil and Al Amin Hossain represented the state.
Police arrested 14 individuals — including the former MP, a university teacher and a journalist — following a ‘mob attack’ during a roundtable discussion at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on 28 August. A case under the Anti-Terrorism Act was later filed against 15 accused, and the court ordered them to be sent to jail on 29 August.
According to the case statement, a platform named ‘Manch 71’ was launched on 5 August to resist alleged attempts to erase or distort the history of the Liberation War, and the 28 August roundtable was held as part of that initiative.
