A former local leader of a student political organisation has been detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) during a pre-dawn security operation near the Patgram border in Lalmonirhat, raising renewed concerns over illegal cross-border activities in the sensitive frontier region.
The detainee, identified as Atik Hasan, aged 25, was apprehended in the early hours of Saturday, 27 December, during a routine patrol conducted by members of the Poyshottibari Border Outpost (BOP), which operates under the Teesta Battalion of the BGB. Authorities confirmed that Atik was found in possession of a locally made sharp weapon and a motorcycle, both of which were seized at the scene.
According to official BGB sources, the patrol team noticed a group of individuals behaving suspiciously within Bangladesh territory near the Auliar Hat area, close to the international border pillars. As officers moved in to investigate, Atik Hasan was detained, while two of his companions managed to flee under the cover of darkness.
The two absconding individuals have been identified as Mohammad Julfikar Ali and Mohammad Rahidul. Efforts are currently underway to confirm their full identities and locations. BGB officials have stated that legal proceedings will be initiated against them once they are traced.
Local sources allege that Atik Hasan was attempting to cross the Shrirampur border point into India while engaging in smuggling activities, a claim that is now being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. The border region has long been considered vulnerable to smuggling due to its geography and porous terrain, prompting frequent patrols and surveillance operations by border forces.
Further details reveal that Atik Hasan is the son of Bajlar Rahman, a resident of the Borderpara area of Patgram. He previously served as president of the western unit of the Patgram branch of Islami Chhatra Shibir, a student organisation. However, party representatives have distanced themselves from him.
A local organisational leader, Amir Sohel Rana, confirmed that Atik Hasan had been expelled from his post due to breaches of internal discipline and currently holds no formal or informal position within the organisation.
Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Nazmul Haque, stated that the BGB has formally filed a case against Atik Hasan. He has since been handed over to police custody and will be produced before the court, after which he is expected to be sent to Lalmonirhat District Jail pending further legal proceedings.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining security along the border and warned that operations against smuggling and criminal activity will continue unabated.
