Former Union Chairman Held in Gopalganj Anti-Terrorism Case

Police have arrested Md Delwar Hossain Dulal Mia, a former chairman of Bahugram Union Parishad and president of the local Jubo League unit, in Muksedpur, Gopalganj. He has been shown arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and was sent to court, police said.

Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Muksedpur Police Station, confirmed the arrest on Thursday, 1 October.

Dulal Mia was arrested from his home in Bahugram Union on Wednesday night, 30 September. According to police, officers went to his residence after receiving information that he was staying there. He was subsequently taken to the police station for further proceedings.

Police said that, following preliminary questioning and the completion of relevant procedures, Dulal Mia was formally shown arrested in the Anti-Terrorism Act case. He was then produced before the court on Thursday.

The officer-in-charge said police had received information about the former Union Parishad chairman’s presence at his residence and conducted an operation there. Dulal Mia was arrested during the operation and later shown arrested in the case before being sent to court.

According to the police, the case concerns alleged attempts to create a climate of fear in Gopalganj through acts of sabotage surrounding a rally organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP). Police have alleged that Dulal Mia was connected to the activities referred to in the case and said this was the basis for showing him arrested in the Anti-Terrorism Act case.

The allegations against him have not, however, been established by a court. Dulal Mia or his family members did not immediately comment on the allegations, leaving his side of the case unreported at the time of his arrest.

Police said the investigation is continuing and that other relevant aspects of the case are also being examined. The next stage of the legal process will proceed in accordance with the court’s directions following his appearance before the court.

Dulal Mia previously served as chairman of Bahugram Union Parishad. Alongside his role in local government, he was also president of the Bahugram Union Jubo League unit.

His arrest has drawn attention in local political and social circles because of his previous positions in both local government and party politics. Police are continuing to investigate the allegations, while the judicial process will determine the subsequent legal steps in the case.
