Four Accused Confess in Court Over Killing of Garment Worker in Mymensingh

A major development has emerged in the investigation into the killing of garment factory worker Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka upazila, as four accused individuals have formally confessed to their involvement before a court. The confessional statements were recorded on Thursday afternoon at the Mymensingh Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court by Senior Judicial Magistrate Tahmina Akter Toma under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The accused who gave voluntary confessions are Tarek Hossain (19), Manik Mia (20), Nizam-ul-Haq (20), and Azmal Sagir (26). All four are employees of Pioneer Knitwears (BD) Limited, located in the Dubaliapara area of Hobirbari Union in Bhaluka. According to court and police sources, the accused acknowledged their direct involvement in the incident and also disclosed the names of several other individuals allegedly linked to the crime.

Inspector PSM Mostachinur Rahman of the Mymensingh Court Police confirmed that the case is currently being investigated by the Detective Branch (DB) of the district police. After being interrogated on remand, the four accused were produced before the court, where they chose to make confessional statements. Following the hearing, the court ordered that they be remanded to judicial custody.

The killing took place on the night of 18 December, when Dipu Chandra Das, an employee of the same garment factory, was detained following allegations of religious misconduct. Dipu, a resident of Mokamiakanda village in Banihala Union under Tarakanda upazila, was the son of Rabi Chandra Das. His death triggered widespread outrage and concern, particularly within industrial and labour communities.

In response to the incident, Dipu’s brother, Apu Chandra Das, filed a criminal case naming between 140 and 150 unidentified individuals as accused. Subsequent joint operations led to the arrest of multiple suspects—seven by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and five by the police. On 22 December, a court granted three days’ remand for interrogation for each of them.

Police officials stated that six suspects were taken into custody earlier this week for further questioning, and additional confessions are anticipated. Two senior factory officials—the floor in-charge Alamgir Hossain (38) and quality in-charge Miraj Hossain (46)—are expected to be produced before the court following the completion of their remand period.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that the confessions have yielded crucial information. While specific details remain confidential for the sake of the investigation, he noted that although the incident appeared spontaneous, elements of prior coordination are being examined. He also confirmed that six more individuals were arrested on Wednesday night, bringing the total number of detainees in the case to 18.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring a transparent investigation and due legal process.
