Dhaka police have arrested four individuals in connection with the shocking murder of content creator Rakibul Islam, which occurred near the Central Shaheed Minar in Shahbagh. The announcement was made on Wednesday morning by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Division.
According to the police, a press briefing initially scheduled for 1:00 pm on Wednesday at the DMP Media Centre has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. Authorities have stated that further details regarding the arrests and ongoing investigation will be provided in due course.
Incident Details
The fatal attack took place on Sunday night around 9:15 pm, when Rakibul Islam was socialising with friends on the steps of the Shaheed Minar. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of youths suddenly approached the area, opened fire targeting him, and subsequently inflicted multiple stab wounds before fleeing the scene.
One of the attackers was apprehended on the spot by bystanders armed with a machete and handed over to Shahbagh Police Station.
Police investigations indicate that the attack was premeditated and stemmed from a romantic dispute. Authorities have confirmed that the assault involved seven to eight perpetrators, who were reportedly brought to Dhaka from a specific location on hire.
