Four Brothers Arrested Over Mymensingh Tenant Murder

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has claimed to have uncovered the motive behind the killing of 40-year-old Rajib Ahmed Rubel, whose throat-slit body was recovered from a rented house in Mymensingh city. According to investigators, the killing was a planned act of revenge carried out by the four sons of the landlady after Rubel allegedly assaulted and sexually harassed their mother during a dispute over his tenancy.

The four accused, identified as Rahmat, 30, Jony, 28, Rocky, 26, and Imraj, 18, have been arrested in connection with the case.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday afternoon, PBI Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman outlined the findings of the investigation and described the sequence of events that allegedly led to the fatal attack.

According to the PBI, Rubel had rented a room in a house in the Chhatrishbari Colony area of Mymensingh around a month before the incident. Investigators said disagreements soon developed between him and the landlady, Parul, over his behaviour. The investigation found that Rubel regularly brought different people to the rented premises for gatherings, while allegations were also made that narcotics were consumed there. These issues reportedly prompted the landlady to instruct him to vacate the property from the following month.

Investigators claimed that Rubel refused to comply with the instruction and insisted on remaining in the house despite the owner’s objections, causing tensions between the tenant and the landlord’s family to escalate.

According to the PBI’s account, the confrontation reached a critical point on the morning of the incident when Rubel allegedly kicked the door of the landlady’s room, waking her and one of her sons. A heated argument soon followed. The agency alleged that the dispute turned violent, during which Rubel physically assaulted the landlady and sexually harassed her.

The PBI said the alleged attack on their mother deeply enraged her four sons. Following discussions among themselves, they allegedly decided to retaliate rather than seek legal action. Investigators claim that they later carried out a premeditated attack using a Chinese-style axe, striking Rubel in the neck. He died at the scene from the injuries.

The suspects are said to have fled the area immediately after the killing.

Following the incident, Rubel’s father filed a murder case naming the landlady, three of her sons and a total of eleven individuals as accused, while also including three to four unidentified persons in the complaint.

After taking over the investigation, the PBI collected forensic evidence, examined the crime scene and questioned witnesses and people connected to the case. These investigative steps eventually led to the arrest of the four brothers.

Superintendent Mizanur Rahman said the suspects admitted during preliminary questioning that they had participated in the killing because they were enraged by the alleged assault, abuse and sexual harassment of their mother. He stressed, however, that the investigation remains ongoing and that the authorities are continuing to examine whether any additional individuals were involved or whether other motives contributed to the crime.

Earlier on Monday, law enforcement officers recovered Rubel’s body from the rented accommodation in Chhatrishbari Colony. The victim was the son of the late Abdul Hamid and lived on Ramakrishna Mission Road in Mymensingh city.

Investigators have emphasised that while disputes between landlords and tenants, personal grievances and emotional confrontations can sometimes escalate into violence, such circumstances never justify taking the law into one’s own hands. Officials said any allegation of criminal conduct should be addressed through lawful procedures rather than acts of retaliation.

The PBI has confirmed that its investigation is continuing and that a comprehensive report will be submitted before the court upon completion of the inquiry.
